On reading maps badly

A map is a claim about the world, not the world. I spent an afternoon following a trail that had been rerouted two seasons earlier, and the paper in my pocket insisted otherwise the entire time.

The lesson is not to distrust maps. It is to notice the moment you stopped looking up — when the document became more real to you than the ground. That moment arrives quietly and always earlier than you think.
